Placing of figures on the field

In defence position, it is important to block all attack angles by marking the attacking strikers. It is essential not to overlook the defence line by keeping three or four defenders at the back of the field.

In attack position you must have unmarked players with the shooting line in sight. The centre players are important to support the strikers in attack.

As David Robertson mentioned, a lot of the best, or most successful players use very un-football type formations, that are extremely effective in defensive positions especially it seems. However, I am teaching my boys not to play that way, and to learn to play in similar formations to the real game which we have found adds MUCH more excitement, risk, and fun to the game.

This is a really useful formation!

I agree Brett. Tried using defensive set up on shooting line for a while but found that too chess-like so reverted to usual 4-4-2 set-up since 1980.

For your defence you need to place a minimum of 6 players across the shooting line and then use the outfield players to block incoming attacks in the wider areas. If you watch the best Subbuteo players in the World none of them use real football formations.

We use real football formations to set up our figures for a game, adds a bit more fun to our games.
